Badminton Wales Launches Community Challenge Cup to Engage Global Majority Population

Badminton Wales is excited to announce the launch of its Community Challenge Cup, an initiative designed to engage the global majority population playing badminton in Wales who are not currently members of the national governing body, while also welcoming existing members from these communities to take part.

With the support of Sport Wales, this new competition aims to showcase the benefits of joining Badminton Wales, offering participants the chance to experience the support, opportunities, and community that come with being part of the sport’s official family.

The first event, taking place on April 19, 2026, at Sport Wales National Centre, will focus on men’s doubles for the Asian community. Subject to sufficient interest and team registrations, the competition can also be extended to include a women’s doubles category.

Alongside competitive matches, the day will feature playing and fun sessions for neurodivergent children, ensuring an inclusive environment for the participants. Plans are also underway to introduce training sessions for women in the community at a later stage, reflecting Badminton Wales’ commitment to accessibility and equality in sport.

“This is a key step in our strategy to reach communities that we have not engaged with enough,” said Kelly Aston MBE OLY, CEO of Badminton Wales. “We want to show the wider badminton community in Wales the opportunities that come with being part of Badminton Wales, and most importantly, to create a space where everyone feels welcome, included, and celebrated for their love of the game.”

A Sport Wales spokesperson added, “We are delighted to support this new initiative from Badminton Wales and host its debut event in the Sport Wales National Centre. The Community Challenge Cup is a fantastic example of creating diverse and accessible sport opportunities and supporting a more active nation.”

Badminton Wales would also like to thank its partners, Bengal Dragons Foundation and Welsh Bengals Sporting Club, for their support in delivering this initiative

Following this pilot, Badminton Wales plans to expand the Community Challenge Cup to other groups later this year.
