Insurance at a Glance

An easy guide to what is covered, what is not, and why all players should be insured members.

Key message: Clubs should make sure all players are insured members. If someone is uninsured, there is a real risk that some claims may not be covered.

1. Personal Accident

What it is: Cover for Badminton Wales members if they are injured during recognised badminton activity.

Who is covered:

  • Senior players and coaches who are fully paid members, up to age 85
  • Junior players who are fully paid members, up to age 19

When it applies:

  • Playing
  • Practising
  • Coaching or training
  • Travel to and from recognised activity in the UK

Important: If someone is not a member, they cannot claim under this policy.

2. Public Liability

What it is: Cover for the club or league if they are legally liable.

What it does not do:

  • It does not cover an uninsured player personally
  • It does not give an uninsured player liability cover of their own

If an uninsured player injures someone:

  • The uninsured player has no liability cover of their own
  • The club’s policy would only respond if the club was negligent

What if a club knowingly allows an uninsured player to play?

This creates a serious risk. The insurer may argue the club failed to take reasonable precautions or deliberately ignored the risk.

  • A deliberate breach of league or governing body rules
  • A failure to take reasonable precautions
  • An increased risk the club allowed to exist
This could give the insurer grounds to decline a liability claim.

What clubs should do

  • Make sure all players are insured members
  • Do not allow uninsured players to take part in league or club activity
  • Follow governing body and league requirements at all times

Best practice: Ensure every player is insured before they play.
