Words: Natasha Cutter, Development.
T’was a dark and stormy night (9am on a Sunday) when Rhodri the Dragon touched down in Ebbw Vale for the first of the Dragon Series. Designed to take all the stress out of playing tournaments, we wanted to make these as beginner/novice friendly as possible. So as the winds howled outside we blew up balloons, got out the fluffy dragons and got to work!
Fantastic games were had in all the age groups, and we were really impressed by everybody who played. Everyone contributed to a great atmosphere, so huge thanks to all the players and the supporters!
As the age groups came to a close, we still had a bit of time left over. This was where the 40+ tournament came in. The combined age of each pair had to be over 40 so players dragged parents and grandparents on court to battle it out for one of our small, fluffy dragons. With time to reflect, we still aren’t sure what we’re more impressed be – the sheer enthusiasm of all the players or the ingenuity of some of the team names.
The Development Team would like to thank Ebbw Vale Junior Badminton Club for their support in the build-up to the event, along with all of the willing participants!
Our next Dragon Series events will be held in Llanishen (11th Dec) and Anglesey (also the 11th Dec!) For more details, visit the Dragon Series page on the website:www.badminton.wales/dragon-series
